can't disable copilot code reviews

I have disabled Copilot everywhere I can possibly find a setting for it but it seems that other contributors can still request that the bot "review" code, which clutters up a pull request with useless comments which must be deleted or ignored. It seems that https://github.com/copilot is not a normal user so I can't block it, and it's not an "app" so I can't revoke its permissions.

Is the only option here to migrate away from Github?

But if they don't push Copilot and force it down everybody's throat, they'll be forced to admit a lot of people don't want it at all, and shareholders will be angry at Satya, and Satya doesn't want that.

I agree they should make it optional -- I thought in the repository settings you were able to turn off github usage, but maybe that didn't apply to PR reviews.

For what it is worth, I have found the reviews to generally be quite good and worthwhile (including minor things that a junior engineer might miss). Sometimes they are wrong, but mostly they are insightful.

Like normal PR comments, if I get no comments I always worry if it was checked properly (I am always skeptical of it being one of those rare moments when I wrote perfect code the first time).

Why does it matter if someone does a code review on their own change? Why would you care if there are comments that people are likely to never see again? Having Copilot do reviews has saved me hours and hours of time from telling people that they are doing something simple wrong.

It may not be the answer you are looking for, but:

I don't think there is a way to disable this for users that have access to it (even if it is your repo). I had a look, but couldn't find this (although you can disable things like allows agents to run).

Maybe it makes sense to do this, but it is probably not practical, e.g. if I fork your repo, then create a PR (in my fork), should I be able to use my own Github tools, including Copilot review, on my PR (even if it targets a branch in your repo)? That's probably not up to you.

You can configure automatic Copilot reviews, so if the issue is that every time you submit code that Copilot does an automatic review for you, then you can turn that off (by default it is off, so you might have turned it on). I don't think there is a way to disable/remove the button to manually review.

And no way to stop someone else clicking that button; i.e. you can't stop me using a tool that I have access to when reviewing a PR you created (in a public repo).

No, there are plenty of other options.

If you turn of automatic reviews and never click the button, then it won't review automatically (for you).

As for the button itself, just ignore it.

Even if someone else does run the tool on your PR, you can just ignore what it says. The same as you can ignore if someone manually adds comments (or spam). I don't know if there is a way to block a user (I couldn't see it when I checked some comments on my PRs), although you can Report Content. Maybe there is some other general way to block, which would be a limitation if it can't be used for Github.

But even if you can't block, you can still just ignore any comments.

(Although I suggest reading them, as you may find it has some useful feedback).

Of course you'll never prevent anyone to submit an AI generated request to an open source project as long as these tools are available. But you could make the interface less confusing and save everyones time by making clear that AI generated requests will be closed and are unwanted.

So if GitHub doesn't want to let repo owners disable this button, they should at least allow them to set a message right above that button that makes clear that submissions using that tool (or similar ones) will be dismissed. At which point you could as well disable the button.

This is just about an interface that points users into the right direction – like the Issue forms for different issue types. People can still post whatever they want, but the interface helps following the project's guidelines without actually reading them.
